10th May 2006 - Coppell signs Deal
After leading Reading to the top flight of English football for the first time in their history, Royals boss Steve Coppell has signed a new deal at The Madejski Stadium.
Coppell was recently named as the LMA Manager of the Season after a tremendous campaign for the club that saw them break the record for the highest points tally in The Championship.
Reading lost just twice in the league this season and Coppell's success even saw him speculatively linked with the England job in March, however he has now committed himself to The Royals for their Premiership adventure next season.
Announcing the news, chairman John Madejski expressed his delight at keeping hold of the talented manager for another term.
"We are delighted that Steve Coppell has agreed to extend his contract for the forthcoming season on terms commensurate with The Premiership," Madejski told the club's official website. "As I have said many times, getting the manager's signature on the contract was just a formality as we had long since agreed that he would be staying, but I am pleased that the small print has now been agreed. Steve's achievements this season have been quite phenomenal and we are greatly looking forward to continuing our excellent relationship as we prepare for our first season in the top flight of English football."
Although he waited until after the completion of Reading's fantastic promotion campaign to commit his future to the club, Coppell insisted that he was always going to put pen to paper.
"In my mind there was never any doubt that I'd sign another contract at Reading. It was never an issue for me, as I consistently said when asked about it," said Coppell. "I know this club well and I understand and appreciate the desire of our Chairman and everyone at Reading football club to do well next season. We are looking forward to the next challenge which is infinitely bigger than the last one."

The game has been confirmed by Colin Calderwood and Steve Coppell as both sides begin to plan their build up to the 2006/2007 season. The game will be played two days after the Cobblers return from their pre-season training camp in Austria. "It's a very attractive fixture for us," said Cobblers boss Colin Calderwood. "Reading are guaranteed of promotion and they have been inundated with requests for a pre-season game because they are now a Premiership team. We would like to thank Steve Coppell, Nicky Hammond, Kevin Dillon and everyone at Reading for agreeing to this fixture. It is very hard these days to get a Premiership team to come and play you in pre-season, especially this summer as the Premiership starts two weeks after the Football League and our build up will be at different stages. Reading believe it is a good game for them. They will be coming to play on a good surface in front of a decent crowd and without too far to travel. It will be a good chance for us to see a team who has progressed from where we are right the way through, and of course that is what we want to emulate Our pre-season is really beginning to take shape now."
