This year's ESC finals was the first in the history of the ESC to approach the character of an outdoor arrangement. The show took place in the Danish national stadium, called Parken, which is mainly used for football matches and outdoor concerts.
The ESC arrangement was made possible by the fact that Parken was fitted with a 95 x 130-m sliding roof, enabling the persons in charge of the arrangement to cover the stadium completely in the matter of 20 minutes. At the same time, it was possible to create a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius inside the covered stadium and thus create the atmosphere desirable for an international show such as the ESC without forcing the audience to wear warm clothes.
Parken is situated not more than 3 km. from the center of the city and only 15 km. from the international airport. The stadium was built back in 1992 on the exact same location as the old stadium from 1911. All that is left of the old stadium is the one side of the old and beautiful grand stand that has been converted into covered stand seats at the end of the new Parken.
Apart from the fact that Parken is the home ground of the Danish national football team and F.C. København (which is a team playing in the national football league), the stadium is also used for outdoor concerts during the summer. U2, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and many other super stars have given concerts in Parken. Moreover, it is also in Parken that you'll find the Hall of Fame, which is a museum honoring the achievements of Danish sports stars by displaying busts portraying them.
By the way, did you know that
  • 13 km of draught beer pipeline have been installed underneath Parken
  • underneath the playing field, 32 km of heating elements have been installed
  • the playing field is 68 m wide and 105 m long
  • there is 32 m from the top seat stand down to the playing field.
